Füllkrug Ends ZDF Interview After Bremen's Loss to Stuttgart

Eka·November 8, 2026·4 min read

Niclas Füllkrug ended a post-match interview with ZDF on Sunday after Werder Bremen's 1-0 Bundesliga defeat to VfB Stuttgart, according to BILD. The 33-year-old striker, who had scored in seven consecutive league games before the match, was asked about his nomination by Germany coach Jürgen Klopp for the upcoming international fixtures and made clear he did not want to discuss it.

"Ein bisschen Respekt. Wir haben gerade ein Spiel verloren. Das ist gerade nicht in meinem Kopf," Füllkrug said when asked what the call-up meant to him after more than a year away from the national team. He added that he was not thinking about the Nations League matches in Serbia on Friday or against the Netherlands three days later.

Why it matters

The exchange puts a spotlight on the tension between club disappointment and international duty, and on how quickly a routine post-match interview can turn. Füllkrug is the Bundesliga's leading scorer this season with nine goals, and his return to the Germany squad under Klopp was one of the weekend's talking points. Instead of discussing it, the striker chose to walk away — a moment that spread quickly across German media, with BILD, Spiegel and T-Online all reporting on it.

For Werder Bremen, the defeat to Stuttgart was a setback, and Füllkrug's reaction underlined how much the result weighed on him. For the German federation, the episode is a reminder that player availability for media duties after a loss can be delicate, particularly when the questions shift to national-team matters.

A question too far

According to BILD, Füllkrug grew visibly irritated as reporter Florian Zschiedrich pressed on the international topic. The striker said he did not want to be impolite but stressed that his focus was on the game just lost, not on what was coming the following week. He pointed out that Bremen had played well despite the 1-0 reverse.

When Zschiedrich tried once more, saying he wanted to quote Klopp, Füllkrug had had enough. "Nee, danke, ciao," he said, according to BILD, before setting the microphone down on the table. He then shook the reporter's hand politely before leaving.

The gesture was firm but not hostile — a brief, courteous exit rather than a confrontation. Still, the abrupt end to the interview made headlines in its own right, with Spiegel leading its coverage with the same three words.

Füllkrug's Germany record

BILD notes that Füllkrug last featured in a Germany squad in September 2025, when Julian Nagelsmann was still in charge. His most recent cap came at the Nations League Finals in June 2025, in a 2-0 defeat to France in the third-place match. His last goal for Germany was more than two years ago, in a 5-0 win over Hungary in September 2024.

At club level, the striker has been in strong form. BILD reports he has scored twelve goals in ten competitive appearances for Werder this season, including his run of seven straight Bundesliga games with a goal before Sunday's loss. That record made his omission from the conversation — and his refusal to engage with it — all the more notable.

Klopp's decision to bring him back was widely seen as a reward for that scoring run. Füllkrug's response after the Stuttgart game suggested he would rather let his performances speak than discuss the recall in the immediate aftermath of a defeat.

What to watch

Füllkrug is expected to join the Germany squad for the Nations League fixtures against Serbia and the Netherlands. Whether he addresses the nomination publicly then — and how he responds on the pitch — will be the next point of interest, with Bremen also looking to bounce back in the Bundesliga.
